Proactive vs. Reactive

When it comes to health, we usually are on one of two roads, PROACTIVE or REACTIVE. What exactly does that mean? If you’re not sick, but maybe say you have a history in your family of certain diseases, you might decide to get on the PROACTIVE road. Now, this would mean you are not just resigned to believing because Grandma Suzy and your Mom and Sister had a history of diabetes, that you will get it too. There is something called “Epigenetics” which according to the CDC – “it’s the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work.” In other words, if you eat the same diet and have the same habits that your family has, you might end up with the same diseases. So, you decide to take the proactive road, changing how you eat, exercise, deal with stress etc.

The REACTIVE ROAD. This is one I’m all to familiar with. I have been plagued with a number of illnesses and diseases that have caused me to now, struggle to find a way to help reverse these illnesses. This can be harder than being pro-active depending on the length of time you’ve been sick and the amount of damage the sickness has caused. But none-the-less, when we use food and herbs, stress reduction, sleep and exercise, we can find that many of our symptoms become less severe and sometimes reversed. Aiding your body in healing itself can be the key to achieving optimal health. The length of time this takes varies person to person. Everyone’s body is different. It also depends on your commitment to change. If we sneak in a cheat day, or two, it can slow down the process. Asking yourself, “Is this food, healing me, or hurting me?” before you eat. Exercising even when you don’t feel like it, is a commitment. Hey, that looks different depending on where you are. I started off doing 30 minute YouTube chair exercises, 3 times per week. It’s about getting in the habit, making the commitments, changing your mindset that helps to change your lifestyle. When does it end??? It doesn’t. Why would you go back to what made you sick in the first place. Find joy in being healthy, pain free, and full of energy. Go on, show yourself some love! You are worth it!
